Monitoring Corrosion and Scale

Common monitoring methods include:

  • Monitoring changes in pressure, temperature and/or production
  • Weight loss coupons (gives only average rate)
  • Test nipples or spools, subs (more costly to install and recover)
  • Caliper surveys for tubing (disrupts production, which adds to cost)
  • Product residuals (corrosion deposit analyses)
  • Inhibitor residual analysis
  • Iron counts
  • Bacteria counts
  • Bio-Film monitoring
  • Scale coupons
  • Brine analyses
  • Corrosion instruments (electrical)
  • Copper Ion Displacement (CID) tests (work only in certain areas)
  • LPR, ER, or Induction probes
  • PAIR instruments (reads instant corrosion rates but must have conductive media over probe)
  • Electronic resistance instruments (fairly quick, but can give false readings with pits or deposits)
  • Hydrogen patches/probes (indirect measurement)
  • Failure record keeping and visual inspection (after failures have occurred)
  • Failure analysis

Other tools that are sometimes used include A/C Impedance and electrochemical noise instruments.
