Monitoring Corrosion and Scale
Common monitoring methods include:
- Monitoring changes in pressure, temperature and/or production
- Weight loss coupons (gives only average rate)
- Test nipples or spools, subs (more costly to install and recover)
- Caliper surveys for tubing (disrupts production, which adds to cost)
- Product residuals (corrosion deposit analyses)
- Inhibitor residual analysis
- Iron counts
- Bacteria counts
- Bio-Film monitoring
- Scale coupons
- Brine analyses
- Corrosion instruments (electrical)
- Copper Ion Displacement (CID) tests (work only in certain areas)
- LPR, ER, or Induction probes
- PAIR instruments (reads instant corrosion rates but must have conductive
media over probe)
- Electronic resistance instruments (fairly quick, but can give false readings
with pits or deposits)
- Hydrogen patches/probes (indirect measurement)
- Failure record keeping and visual inspection (after failures have occurred)
- Failure analysis
Other tools that are sometimes used include A/C Impedance and
electrochemical noise instruments.
