January, 2000
We hope you all survived the Y2K date with no major problems. Some of you may have
noticed that and the Energy and Minerals Division and OCD web sites are down. This was not
a Y2K problem but simply a coincidence in timing. As a result of this, production data has
not been updated for the past month's new data. There will also be delays in getting our
State Lands Lease Sale notices up for the past and coming month, due to changes within the
State Land Office and the Christmas break here at New Mexico Tech.
The Southwest PTTC is now planning our year's workshops and schedule. Currently in
consideration are a workshop on emerging technologies, planned for Hobbs in late March or
early April, and environmental issues, for Farmington in May. Also we will be
co-sponsoring a fractured reservoir session at the AAPG Rocky Mountain Section meeting in
Albuquerque in September. If you would like to attend, contribute to, or suggest speakers
for any of the programs, be sure to contact us at 505-835-5685.
We would like to congratulate Read & Stevens of Roswell, New Mexico, upon being the
recipient of one of the Department of Energy's "Technology Development with
Independents" awards. This program has been very popular and we are fortunate to have
some of this money coming to New Mexico. Read & Stevens project is entitled,
"Petrophysical investigation of the secondary recovery potential in the Cherry Canyon
Formation, Northeast Lea Field, Lea County, New Mexico." They will be taking fresh
core from the Cherry Canyon Formation, preserving this core, and using special core
analysis and other techniques to assess potential for successful waterflooding in each
identified rock type. For more information on this and other awards, please
read our article. The deadline for the next round of proposals on this project is February
7th.
The Department of Energy also announced the awards in the first of two rounds of
proposals for their Oil Technology Development on Native American Lands project. The
Energy Department plans to provide a total of $1.3 million in federal funding for
three projects. Awards went to tribes in Montana (Fort Peck Indian Reservation), Oklahoma
(Osage tribe), and Wyoming (Wind River Reservation).
Again, a reminder to read our Permian and San Juan Basin newsletters for information on
oil and gas activity in New Mexico. We've added a table of contents to make these pages
easier to navigate. If you are interested in prices, rig counts, well activity, or
analysis of the current situation in either producing area of New Mexico, be sure to check
these pages. If there is other information you want to see, contact either George Lippman or Martha Cather.
And finally, we hope you have a successful and productive new year! |
