PTTC Co-Sponsors Hydraulic Fracturing Workshop

The Southwest and Texas RLO's of the PTTC are co-sponsoring a Hydraulic Fracturing workshop to be held in Midland Tx on March 30th. The workshop will have a morning session devoted to recent advances in hydraulic fracture analytical and evaluation techniques, while the afternnoon will feature case studies and a panel discussion.

Industry Service & Outreach Group Receives Funding

The PRRC's ISOG has recently been funded by the U.S. DOE to build a database of well and core information for the San Juan Basin. This 2-year, approximately $600,000 project, “Petrophysical Analysis and Geographic Information System for San Juan Basin Tight Gas Reservoirs” entails the creation of a database system that compiles accumulated data from northwestern New Mexico’s San Juan Basin gas and oil wells. The primary goal of this project is to increase the availability and ease of access to critical data on the Mesaverde and Dakota tight gas reservoirs of the San Juan Basin. We will be holding a kickoff meeting in Farmington NM on February 16th to introduce this project, seek operator input, and show preliminary results of similar work we've done on completion data in the Dakota formation.

Rockies Core Locator

Core Locator is an interactive map-based search engine that is under development by PTTC Rocky Mountain Region. The project is national in scope, but at this time, cores and samples from AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, HI, IA, ID, IN, KS, KY, LA, MO, MT, NB, ND, NE, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OR, SD, TX, UT, WA, and WY that reside in the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG), Appalachian, North Dakota, Oklahoma Geological Survey (OGS), Utah Geological Survey (UGS), and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) core libraries are displayed. San Juan Basin—Reserve Adds From Menefee Formation

See Page 24 Article in Gas TIPS, Summer 2005. San Juan Basin operators typically complete wells in the Point Lookout and Cliff House Sandstones, ignoring the lenticular, lower quality Menefee Formation between them. Researchers from New Mexico Tech analyzed data from more than 75 new completions along with 30 original and 1980s wells, all within the same geographic area. Results show that adding the Menefee increases incremental per well cumulative production by 103 MMscf. Reserve additions from the Menefee are much higher, more than double, when the Menefee is added on initial completion rather than by remedial workover.

We often get asked for information about oil and gas reserves in New Mexico. The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources is a great source of information, and they have put together a document addressing this issue.
