New Mexico Library of Subsurface Data (NMLSD) Library
Manager - Ron Broadhead - (505)835-5402 The library is an important source of geological and engineering information regarding exploration for, and development of, oil and natural gas, water, coal, uranium, carbon dioxide, and helium in New Mexico. The NMLSD is used by industry, students, federal and state agencies, and by NMBGMR geologists. Several hundred visitors and telephone inquiries are received each year. Data elements on file include: well cuttings (13,000 wells), core (500 holes), well records (90,000 wells), driller's logs (17,000 wells), electric and other geophysical logs (46,000 drill holes), sample descriptions and logs (4300 wells), source rock analyses, biostratigraphic data (150 wells), petroleum-exploration maps that show location of wells drilled in frontier areas (26 counties), geologic maps, production data by well and pool, petroleum-related publications, field and pool data and maps (organized by stratigraphic units), and a limited number of core analyses and drill-stem test records. Well records include approximately 100 notebooks filled with one-of-a-kind reports on older wells throughout the state, donated by geologist Neil Wills of Carlsbad, NM. Facilities and microscopes are available for cuttings analyses, and work tables are provided for visitors. Photocopies of records such as well logs and petroleum-exploration maps may be obtained at a nominal cost. A core library consisting of four 100 x 30 foot metal buildings contains cores from exploratory holes for minerals, coal, oil and gas, and water. More than 1100 cores are included in this production. Arrangements can be made to borrow cuttings; please contact the NMLSD for more information. Core Library Petroleum Information Specialist - Elizabeth Fleming - (505)835-5139) The purpose of the Core Library is to have available for study representative cores from rock formations in different parts of New Mexico. The NMBGMR Core Library facility consists of four warehouses, a processing area, and tables for examining material in a temperature-controlled room. Microscopes are available for visitors' use. The NMBGMR allows samples of cores to be taken, provided that at least one-half of the core remains. There are several types of splitting machines in the Core Library. However; all sampling must be approved before samples are taken. In addition to the cores, location information, geophysical logs, driller's logs, and other materials are available for many holes. More than 1098 different cores donated by 75 companies or other organizations are ready for examination and many others are being processed. The age of units in these cores ranges from Precambrian to Holocene. Companies or individuals wishing to donate core to the NMBGMR are asked to call or write. One core building is dedicated to archiving representative cores from oil and gas reservoirs in New Mexico. These cores will be available for studies and experiments concerning secondary and tertiary oil recovery. Another core building is dedicated to samples and cores from water wells.
