Carb III
In October 2007, New Mexico Tech was awarded Phase III of the U.S. DOE’s Carbon
Sequestration Project, which involves a large-volume test over 10 years for the
storage of one million or more tons of CO2 in a deep saline reservoir. The Southwest
Partnership on Carbon Sequestration, headed by PRRC, is one of seven regional carbon
sequestration partnerships managed by DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory
(NETL). These partnerships involve a variety of organizations in a nationwide network
that will help determine the best approaches for capturing and permanently storing
greenhouse gases. Phase II, currently in progress, comprises several smaller-scale
sequestration projects around the SW Region. For both phases, PRRC serves as the
administrative center as well as performing a variety of research activities.
RPSEA
The PRRC will be leading an important new initiative that is part of a larger effort
to fund energy research in the US. The Small Producer Program of the Research Partnership
to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA) will be responsible for developing and administering
solicitations for R&D projects that target technology needs of small producers.
The parent organization, RPSEA, (www.rpsea.org)
is a consortium with more than 100 members that has established and coordinates
a federally-funded research program focused on hydrocarbon recovery from US reservoirs.
